Usted vs Tú vs Vos in Colombia: Which One Do You Use?
Colombia uses all three second-person pronouns: usted, tú, and vos. Here is when each one is normal, how the regions differ, and how to not sound off.
Spanish courses usually teach two ways to say "you": tú for informal and usted for formal. Colombia uses three, and the rules are not the textbook rules. Here is what actually happens.
The three pronouns
- Usted is the most used second-person pronoun in much of the country.
- Tú is common in some regions and contexts, and is understood everywhere.
- Vos is normal, friendly, everyday speech in several large regions.
The surprise for most learners is usted. You were probably taught that usted is formal and a little distant. In Andean Colombia, including Bogotá, people use usted with close friends, with their kids, with a partner, even with the dog. It signals closeness as much as respect.
Region by region
- Bogotá and the Andean interior (rolos and the surrounding highlands): heavy use of usted across the board, with tú appearing in casual or flirtatious contexts.
- Antioquia (Medellín, the Paisa region) and Valle del Cauca (Cali): vos is the default informal pronoun. You will hear "¿vos qué hacés?" and "vení" constantly.
- The Caribbean coast (Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta): tú is much more common, often with a fast, clipped rhythm.
None of these are hard borders. Many Colombians slide between all three depending on who they are talking to and the mood.
How the verbs change
Tú and usted you may already know. Here is the Colombian vos in the present tense and commands, which is the part courses skip:
- vos hablás, vos comés, vos vivís
- vos sos (you are), vos tenés, vos podés, vos querés
- commands: vení (come), mirá (look), hacé (do), comé (eat)
The stress lands on the last syllable, and there is no stem change: it is "vos podés," not "vos puedes." Past, future, and other tenses are the same as tú.
A safe strategy for learners
- Default to tú. It is understood everywhere and no one will be confused.
- Mirror the person you are talking to. If a Paisa friend uses vos with you, use it back. If a Bogotano uses usted with you warmly, do the same.
- Lean on usted in Bogotá. It is rarely wrong and often the most natural choice.
- Recognize vos even if you do not produce it yet. Just understanding "¿vos qué más?" puts you ahead.

Frequently asked questions
Is usted formal in Colombia?
Not only. In much of Andean Colombia, including Bogotá, usted is also used with friends, family, partners, and even pets. It carries warmth and closeness as often as it carries formality, which surprises learners who were taught usted is strictly formal.
Where is vos used in Colombia?
Vos is everyday speech in Antioquia (Medellín and the Paisa region), the Valle del Cauca (Cali), and parts of the Pacific. It is informal and friendly. Colombian vos uses forms like vos sos, vos tenés, vos podés, and the commands vení and mirá.
Will people understand me if I just use tú everywhere?
Yes. Tú is understood across the whole country and is a safe default for a learner. You may simply sound a little less local than someone who switches to usted or vos the way Colombians do.
Does the verb change between tú and vos?
Yes, in the present tense and commands. Tú: tú hablas, tú comes, tú tienes, habla, mira. Vos (Colombian): vos hablás, vos comés, vos tenés, hablá, mirá. The other tenses are shared.
